TERMS FOR ANGLE PROBLEMS

Acute Angle: angle whose measurement is less than 90°
Right Angle: angle whose measurement is 90°
Obtuse Angle: angle whose measurement is greater than 90°
Straight Angle: another way of looking at a line, which measures 180°
Complementary Angles: the sum of the degrees of two angles equals 90°
Supplementary Angles: the sum of the degrees of two angles equals 180°

RULES FOR ANGLE PROBLEMS

1) When two lines intersect:
      a) the vertical angles are equal
      b) the adjacent angles are supplementary

2) Bisecting an angle creates two equal angles

3) When two lines intersect:
      a) four equal acute angles are formed
      b) four equal obtuse angles are formed
      c) one acute angle + one obtuse angle = 180°

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTION FOR ANGLES

1.

If line l is parallel to line m, what is the value of x + y?

      Solution
      1) It is important to mark the figures in angle questions in order to avoid silly mistakes.

      2) A straight angle is formed by 155° and y, so y + 155 = 180 and y = 25.

      3) A straight angle is also formed by 155° and x2, so x2+ 155 = 180, x2 = 25, and x = 5.

      4) x + y = 25 + 5 = 30
