TERMS FOR INEQUALITIES

Inequality: shows the relative size of two objects
     >: greater than
     <: less than
≥: greater than or equal to
≤: less than or equal to

RULES FOR INEQUALITIES
1) If multiplying or dividing by negative numbers, the inequality sign is reversed.

ex. -4x < 20 --> x > -5

2) If x < y and y < z, then x < z

ex. 1 < 2 and 2 < 3, then 1 < 3

3) If x < y and w < z, then x + w < y + z

ex. 2 < 3 and 4 < 6, then 2 + 4 < 3 + 6

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR INEQUALITIES

1. If 6 + 3x > 4 – x, what is the value of x?

      Solution
      6 + 3x > 4 – x
      4x > -2
      x > -1/2

2. If -8 (4 – 4x) 8, what is the value of x?

     Solution
     1) -8 – 4
(-4x) 8 – 4
        -12
(-4x) 4

     2) Both sides must be divided by -4. This reverses both inequality signs.
         3
x -1 or -1 x 3
