MATH TERMS FOR NUMBER LINES

Number Line: Representation of real numbers, with arrows that indicate that the line continues “forever” in negative and positive directions

TIP FOR NUMBER LINE PROBLEMS
If a number line problem does not precisely show the value of a point, do not be afraid to use your own approximate values. When you do so for negative numbers, don’t forget to keep the negative sign.

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTION FOR
NUMBER LINES

In the number line above, which point best approximates the product of point i and point j?
(A) Point h   (B) Point l
  (C) Point k   (D) Point m   (E) Point n

     Solution

The values for points i and j are not precisely defined, so use the number line to assign your own approximate values.

     One possibility: point i = –0.2 and point j = –1.8.

The product of these values is 0.36, a value that is approximated best on the number line by point k. So the answer is (C).
