TERMS FOR OTHER POLYGONS PROBLEMS

Polygon: a shape that has straight lines for sides (ex. triangle, square, pentagon)
Quadrilateral: polygon that has four sides (ex. parallelogram, rectangle, square)
Pentagon: polygon that has five sides
Internal Angles: angles contained inside a geometric shape
Exterior Angles: angles on the outside edges of a geometric shape

RULES FOR OTHER POLYGONS PROBLEMS

1) The sum of all the interior angles of any quadrilateral is 360°.

            a + b + c + d =180

2) The sum of all the interior angles of any pentagon is 540°.

                a + b + c + d + e =540

3) The sum of all the exterior angles of any polygon is 360°.

              a + b + c = 360°

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTION FOR OTHER POLYGONS

1.

ABCD is a parallelogram and FBED is a square. What is the perimeter of ABCD if BD (not shown) equals 82 and AB = 10?

      Solution
      1) Since FBED is a square, BF = FD and Triangle BFD is a 45-45-90 triangle.

      2) Since Triangle BFD is a 45-45-90 triangle, s = 8. Then AF can be found with the Pythagorean Theorem.

           a2 + b2 = c2 --> a2 + 82 = 102 --> a2 = 36 --> a = 6 --> AF = 6

      4) Perimeter = AB + BC + CD + DA = 10 + 14 +10 + 14 = 48
