TERMS FOR RATE PROBLEMS

Rate: describes the speed with which an action is performed (ex. 65 miles / hour)
Rate Formula: Rate = Distance / Time
Per: divided by, or over (ex. 3 pages per minute = 3 pages / 1 minute)

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR RATES

1. Michael bikes 12 miles everyday from home to work. He bikes at an average of 30 miles per hour on the way to work in the morning and     at an average of 20 miles per hour on the way back home in the evening. How many total minutes does he spend commuting everyday?

      Solution
      A) The question uses two time units: hours and minutes. Since minutes are required in the answer, hours must be converted to minutes.
          30 miles per hour = 30 m / 1 hr = 30 m / 60 min = 1/2 mile/minute
          20 miles per hour = 20 m / 1 hr = 20 m / 60 min = 1/3 mile/minute

      B) Trip to work in the morning
          Time = D / R = 12 m / 0.5m/min = 24 minutes

      C) Trip back home in the evening
          Time = D / R = 12 m / 0.33m/min = 36 minutes

      D) Total time = 24 min. + 36 min. = 60 minutes

2. If it takes 6 workers one hour to put together one car. How long would it take 9 workers to produce the same car?

     Solution
      6 workers
× 1 hour = 9 workers × y hours
       6 = 9ys

y = 2/3
       It would take 2/3 of an hour or 40 minutes.
