STEPS FOR SPECIAL SYMBOL PROBLEMS

1) Write down the operation (uses variables)                                               x œ y = (x + y) (xy)
2) Write down the example, with the symbols aligned
                             3 œ 2 = ?
3) Identify the value of the variables
                                                         x = 3; y = 2
4) Plug in the values
                                                                                  (x + y) (xy) --> (3 + 2) (3 – 2)
5) Solve the resulting equation
                                                                       (5)(1) = 5
