SAT PREP WRITING LESSON 17: "A + NOUN" WITH PLURAL NOUNS

Home |SAT Prep Reading Practice | SAT Prep Math Practice | SAT Prep Writing Practice| SAT Prep Vocab Practice | Bookstore

This type of question incorrectly matches the singular phrase [a + noun] with a plural noun.

For example, “The sports stars always wanted to become [a politician].” Here, the stars are trying to become one politician. Unless they are transformers, this transformation is impossible and the sentence is wrong.

When you see [a + noun] underlined on the test, find the noun with which it is linked.

If [a + noun] is linked with a singular noun, then it is correct. For example, "The student wanted to become a monkey whisperer."
If [a + noun] is linked with a plural noun, it is incorrect. For example, "At the club, the members of the band expected to be a VIP."

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR "A + NOUN" WITH PLURAL NOUNS

Some famous authors never wanted to become a writer,
                                                                (A)                         (B)
while others dreamed of the profession as young children. No Error
          (C)                                                            (D)                              (E)

Looking at choice (B), you see “a writer”. Initially this phrase might look correct. However, it is incorrectly linked with the plural noun “authors”.

Thus choice (B) is grammatically incorrect and should be “writers”.

Whatever their past impact as a great player, Pete Rose and Darryl Strawberry
              (A)                                                 (B)
have recently become more known for off-the-field issues. No Error
                     (C)                                    (D)                                           (E)

Looking at choice (B), you see “a great player”. By itself, this phrase might be correct. However, it is incorrectly linked with two people, “Pete Rose” and “Darryl Strawberry”.

Thus choice (B) is grammatically incorrect and should be “great players”.
