Home |SAT Prep Reading Practice | SAT Prep Math Practice | SAT Prep Writing Practice| SAT Prep Vocab Practice | Bookstore

These questions require you to identify the correct or incorrect usage of adverbs. Adverbs answer the question “how”. They usually end with “–ly” and usually modify verbs.

He deeply believed in the theory. [believed how?–deeply]
But he could not mathematically prove it. [prove how?–mathematically]

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR ADVERBS

Because of a stomach ailment, he ensures that all
                (A)                                                  (B)
his meals are only light seasoned. No Error
                          (C)         (D)                         (E)

In choice (D), you find that “light” is matched with “seasoned”. However, “light” describes how the meals are seasoned and should thus be “lightly”.

His meticulous nature suited his work
                                                (A)
        with numbers,which forever follow clear
         (B)                               (C)                 (D)
        defined rules. No Error
                                    (E)

When you see “clear” underlined in choice (D), you have to determine the word with which it matches.

Here, “clear” is incorrectly matched with “defined” because it answers how the rules are defined.

Thus choice (D) is incorrect and should be “clearly”.
