SAT PREP WRITING LESSON 27: CHOICES THAT FORM 2 SENTENCES

Home |SAT Prep Reading Practice | SAT Prep Math Practice | SAT Prep Writing Practice| SAT Prep Vocab Practice | Bookstore

In Sentence Improvement questions, incorrect answer choices often form two complete sentences. For example, “Economists predict an explosion of developing economies, they will be as vital as developed economies in the West”.

However, these ideas should be separated into two complete sentences: “Economists predict an explosion of developing economies. They will be as vital as developed economies in the West.”

On the SAT, any answer choice that forms two sentences is incorrect. All correct answer choices form only one complete sentence.

TIP FOR ANSWER CHOICES THAT FORM 2 SENTENCES

If you are unsure whether an answer choice forms two complete sentences, take the words off the page and read them to yourself. Test whether the two halves can stand alone as complete sentences. If they can, and they are not separated by a semicolon (;), then the answer choice is incorrect.

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR ANSWER CHOICES THAT FORM 2 SENTENCES

Many people think the tap water is too polluted, therefore, some of them do not drink it.

(A) polluted, therefore, some of them do not drink
(B) polluted, some of them do not drink
(C) polluted; therefore, some of them do not drink
(D) polluted, some of them, consequently, do not drink
(E) polluted, the consequence being that some of them do not drink it

Choice (A) forms two complete sentences (“Many people think that tap water is too polluted. Therefore, some of them do not drink it.”).
Choice (B) also forms two sentences (Many people think that tap water is too polluted. Some of them do not drink it.”).
Choice (D) forms two complete sentences (Many people think that tap water is too polluted. Some of them, consequently, do not drink it.”).
Choice (E) contains “being”, so it is incorrect.
Choice (C) is correct because the semicolon (;) ensures that the answer choice forms only one complete sentence.
