SAT PREP WRITING LESSON 26: ANSWER CHOICES WITH "IT"

Home |SAT Prep Reading Practice | SAT Prep Math Practice | SAT Prep Writing Practice| SAT Prep Vocab Practice | Bookstore

Answer choices with the word “it” appear frequently in sentence improvement questions. “It” is a pronoun that matches only with the first singular noun that comes before it in the sentence.
For example, “Because the cup is dirty, it must be washed before it is used”.

On the SAT, however, “it” is often mismatched with a plural noun or mismatched with the wrong singular noun.

For example, “The closing of the factories drew loud protests from the workers who earned a living from it”.

In this sentence, “it” is incorrectly matched with the plural noun, "factories". The sentence should read, "...a living from them."

TIPS FOR ANSWER CHOICES WITH "IT"

Tip 1: When you see the word “it” in an answer choice, go backwards in the sentence and identify the first singular noun before “it”. If there are only plural nouns present, then immediately eliminate the answer choice.

Tip 2: When you see the word “it” in an answer choice, go backwards in the sentence. If you see more than one singular noun, then "it" is unclear. Therefore you can immediately eliminate the answer choice.
