SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTION FOR -------, SUBJECT (PART II)

Speaking in the cafeteria, volunteer in the community
was the advice Mr. Stokes gave the students.

        (A) volunteer in the community was the advice Mr. Stokes gave the students
        (B) the students were advised to volunteer in the community by Mr. Stokes
        (C) volunteer in the community was what Mr. Stokes advised the students to do
        (D) the students were advised to volunteer by Mr. Stokes in the community
        (E) Mr. Stokes advised the students to volunteer in the community

Recognizing the “-------, Subject” structure, you quickly check the answer choices to make sure that the subject is correct. Ask yourself, “Who spoke in the cafeteria?”

It is not a “volunteer” (Choice A); the “students” (Choice B); a “volunteer” (Choice C); nor the “students” (Choice D).

“Mr. Stokes” spoke in the cafeteria and therefore choice (E) is the correct answer.
