Home |SAT Prep Reading Practice | SAT Prep Math Practice | SAT Prep Writing Practice| SAT Prep Vocab Practice | Bookstore

Comparisons with “than” involve two items that are not equal in some quality. For example, "She is taller than he is."

They often use [more + adjective]: more beautiful, more pretty, more tame.

They often use [less + adjective]: less attractive, less calm, less evil.

They often use [adjective + -er]: funnier, smaller, quieter.

Please remember that “more” and “less” cannot be used together with the comparative.

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTION FOR TWO-ITEM COMPARISONS WITH "THAN"

Franklin and Conan may be equally intelligent, but
                                               (A)       (B)
Franklin is the quicker learner and Conan the
                                    (C)
        most diligent. No Error
         (D)                     (E)

You face a choice between the comparative (-er) form in choice (C) and the superlative (-st) form in choice (D).

Recognizing that the comparison is between two people, you can confirm that choice (C) is grammatically correct.

Choice (D) is incorrect and should be “more diligent”.
