A common question type involves a proper name (in this lesson, “Bob”) and “I”.

If “Bob and I” are the subjects of the sentence, then “I” is correct.

If “Bob and I” are not the subjects, then “I” should be replaced with “me”. In these cases, a preposition usually goes before the phrase “Bob and me”. Common prepositions include “between”, “except”, and “among”.

“Bob and I”
Bob and I enjoy knitting sweaters for the children of the Sub-Sahara.

“Bob and Me”

Except for Bob and me, no one is able to see dead people.

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTION FOR USING "I" OR USING "ME"

Between Bill and I, a battle still rages as to which of our
                             (A)                             (B)                 (C)
classmates can lick envelopes best. No Error
                                                              (D)        (E)

Choice (A) is incorrect because “I” can only be used as a subject.

The sentence should read “Bill and me”. One clue to this fact is that choice (A) occurs after the preposition, “between”.
