SAT WRITING LESSON 2: USING PAST PERFECT TENSE

Home |SAT Prep Reading Practice | SAT Prep Math Practice | SAT Prep Writing Practice| SAT Prep Vocab Practice | Bookstore

This tense uses [had + past participle verb] to show an action that started and finished in the past before another completed action:

                                                                                X -------------------X---------------------*
                                                                           Action 1             Action 2                 Now
                                                                        (More Past)           (Past)                (Present)

Singular and Plural subjects both use "had". For example, "They [had eaten] breakfast before they went to school". Or "He [had seen] a monkey before he went to sleep".

Sentences with this tense often include “already” or “until”.

One common question tests your ability to recognize the past participle. This term indicates the “third-column” verb form: write, wrote, written; swim, swam, swum; see, saw, seen.

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTION FOR PAST PERFECT TENSE

Upon returning to shore, the whale watchers were
          (A)
disappointed to learn that they had not saw whales at
                   (B)                                           (C)
sea but rather giant trash bags. No Error
               (D)                                              (E)

Choice (C) contains the past perfect form, which needs the third-column verb "seen" (see, saw, seen).

Thus choice (C) is the answer.
